Meditation and Mindfulness : Myth and Medicine
Articles
Let’s debunk some myths, you don’t have to sit crossed legged on the floor to meditate, sitting comfortably in a chair is fine. It’s not about emptying your mind, that’s practically impossible, but observing thoughts passing by without engagement is possible and brings greater peace. You don’t have to meditate for hours to reap rewards, ten minutes a day has impact. Meditation is not some ‘airy-fairy’ activity, results are backed by science. You don’t have to be religious to meditate, it can also be practiced in secular ways.
Many of us live challenging lives and over time the stress experienced can impact physical and mental health. Meditation is a subtle yet powerful tool to counteract this. It is a collection of techniques for directing attention. Types of meditation may include focusing on mantra, a candle flame, your breath or loving-kindness, to name but a few. Trying different styles is useful to find out what works for you.
Mindfulness is paying attention to the present moment without judgement or attachment. It’s about bringing your attention into now, leading to greater happiness, rather than being caught up in often negative thoughts about the past or future.
Meditation can be medicinal in reducing stress-related health issues (stomach ulcers, high blood pressure, heart disease, lowered immunity etc). It can improve memory, concentration, resilience, longevity and reduce pain, anxiety and depression.
